Safety Issues

Two EMBA riders were hijacked in the Umhlanga region last week, losing their bikes. Please try to ride in groups, rather than alone or in twos. As the routes are being regularly used, the less than honest members of the public are on the look out for easy targets and know where to look.

Please note that the ENFORCE number on your licence cards has been changed.. In addition, TH have advised us that they only have one vehicle patrolling in the Umhlanga region, and none in the Shongweni area. They, themselves, make use of SAPS for serious offences such as hijackings.

Please change the numbers on your cards as follows.

Enforce Umhlanga 071 672 9208 SAPS 10111

We have employed guides to enhance your riding safety etc. We have had a couple of very unpleasant incidents of riders, NOT EMBA RIDERS, but presumably riders who are known in the community, being rude, unpleasant and taking advantage of their so-called privileged status when requested by the guides to either take out a temporary licence or refrain from tresspassing. If you witness these events, please advise us, with names, so that we follow up.

Those riders who have not renewed and continue to use their 2009 White boards, or those who have renewed and can’t be bothered to change boards PLEASE TAKE NOTE

If you have a White EMBA board on your bike you are riding illegally and you are jeopardising EMBA for all those riders who obey the rules. Whichever category you fall into, we do have a data base of your details. If you are an ex-rider we will, initially use a “Name & Shame” policy and thereafter your name and details will be forwarded to TH for further action as they deem fit, and this could include being charged with trespass. For those who have renewed, the excuse that you “have already renewed, but not collected your board” is NOT A VALID EXCUSE, and your name and details will be forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee for further action. Until such time as you have and display a YELLOW 2010 board you may not ride on TH land.

Those riders who are legally on the land- please discourage, politely, those you see who are damaging your future prospects of riding in the cane.

There are far too many complaints of white boards being sighted out on the routes. In addition there are complaints of riders not adhering to regulation times.

For those who have not renewed and still hope to do so, please do not just send in your renewal form. We only have a few licences left and you need to check before applying.

Rumours abound that ROAG is taking over EMBA. This is nothing more than a rumour, presumably started by one person passing a remark, and as in the Whisper Game, rife amongst cyclists; this has become contorted, changed and now considered to be gospel.

The only part that ROAG has to play in EMBA is as one of the affiliated Clubs. This means that ROAG are subject to all the rules and regulations to which all Clubs are subject, having signed the agreement between EMBA and Tongaat Hullett.

For the record, to obtain a licence via ROAG, a cyclist must be a member of ROAG CLUB. Having a ROAG number by virtue of having participated in a ROAG race does not qualify or enable a cyclist to apply via ROAG. As for all Clubs, once a ROAG cyclist qualifies for an EMBA permit he/she will be issued with an EMBA-specific bike board, in the same way as all other Clubs. A ROAG board is not valid on TH land.

Existing permit holders are free to move between Clubs, without losing their permits. However, please remember that the renewal must come via your Club and must be counter-signed by the Club confirming your membership.

New applicants will be dealt with on a strictly first-come-first-served basis, and this will be administered by Margie. Clubs will have to submit the applications and they will then be dealt with as and when spaces become available. Current licence holders have until 30 November to renew. From 01 ecember, any licences not renewed, will become available for new applicants.

It is now time to renew your permit for 2010. At the AGM it was agreed as follows:-

Existing licence holders have first option to renew

Renewal must be done by 30th November

From 01 December any licence holder who has not renewed will be deemed to have resigned

From 01December applications will be dealt with on a first-come-first-served basis

I will keep the list of new applicants in strict order of receipt

A rider who choose to change Clubs may take his/her licence to the new Club, as long as the new Club is affiliated to EMBA

Applications must be submitted via your Club

A new Indemnity form must be signed.

Existing licensees do not need to submit a new photo

The fee structure for 2010 : First member R250.00. 2nd Adult member (eg spouse) R150. Bona Fide dependent R50

Application forms and indemnity form are available on the website or from your Club

We realise that there are lot of current licensees who do not use their licences, or only very infrequently. If that is you, please consider not renewing, and rather making use of a temporary permit on the few occasions when you do ride in the cane Temporary permits available from various sources.
